Is it alright for a girl to always split bill with the guy while dating?

Both sides of any healthy relationship should be willing to cover the other. Neither partner should EVER expect the other to pay completely, especially based on irrelevant things like gender (birthdays and the like aside). As a result of this, split the bill, alternate paying, whatever. Simple. Where exactly does gender come into this?
